Traditional project management tools were insufficient for this challenge as it was difficult to keep up with the high volume repeatable work.

Challenges

New York City and Intersection partnered to create LinkNYC, a program to convert 7,000+ public payphones into 4,000 Wi-Fi kiosks, creating the world’s largest free wifi network. Traditional project management tools were insufficient for this challenge as it was difficult to keep up with the high volume repeatable work.

LinkNYC is expected to generate millions in advertising revenue for the City of New York over 15 years. Successful management and deployment of the Link kiosk fleet is critical for revenue, especially as a portion of this revenue is shared directly with New York City municipal government. As leaders in civic technology, New York City and Intersection faced high visibility for the initiative, and timely completion was essential for both parties. Intersection required robust audit capabilities as a vendor to the municipal government of New York City, which spreadsheets could not provide.

Solution

Intersection chose to use Sitetracker to manage their innovative project. With over 7,000 public payphones being converted to what will be 4,000 LinkNYC kiosks, each requiring around 450 tasks, they needed a central platform to manage and facilitate collaboration among their many teams. Sitetracker provided an easy-to-use solution, enabling the entire team to see the status of all projects, keeping the public informed through a map of Link locations on LinkNYC’s website.

Despite having access to significant resources, Intersection recognized that purchasing Sitetracker’s purpose-built solution would be more cost-effective and deliver a faster time to value than building project management software in-house. This decision allowed Intersection to complete the project efficiently, generating millions in advertising revenue over a 15-year period, while becoming a leader in civic technology.
